David, The answer is it depends...on several issues. First how much of your racing is PHRF vs. IRC? Next, what is the average/normal wind speeds/sea states in the area you race? IRC generally penalizes overlap, so you would want the smallest genoa/jib that still provides power in your average wind c...

Good chance it is water running down along the wires/cables and into the junction box. With the typical amount of mast rake on a J-109, there is plenty of opportunity for water to come in the Jib and Spin halyard sheeves, and then run down the inside of the mast/along the cables/conduits, and thence...

Barry, Sounds like you need someone to crawl around the engine (very carefully on a calm, smooth day) while running the boat in gear at higher rpm and see if he can find where the water is coming from. I would guess its a hose or maybe even the waterpump housing...as you should get more pressure as ...

Barry, If its the lower rudder bearing, you need to crawl back thru the cockpit locker and visually sight the lower rudder bearing. If its leaking, you will see water "pooled" at the top of the bearing and a trickle of water running down towards the engine pan..Teh rudder bearing its adjus...

Terry, Back when she was Liberty, she would leak from the lower rudder bearing, its adjustable with a allen wrench. If its too loose, you will get water in around the rudder bearing, and that runs down and collects in the floor pan aft of the bilge. When the boat heeled, it would show up under the N...

I raced for 4 years with a 150 in PHRF. I was going to switch to the class sails like Steve did when we decided we need to sell the boat. If you look at the VPP diagrams, there isn't enough of a boat speed difference between the 150 (or 155 PHRF Max) and the class jib to make up for the rating diffe...

Craig, I found (while I still had Liberty) that as little as an 1/8 or even a 1/16 of a turn on the set screws in the top plate of the lower bearing could significantly affect how stiff the steering was. Try slightly loosening the screws. Might make a world of difference. Too loose and you''ll get w...

Gerry, It depends to some degree on where you will be racing and what the both the average wind speed is, as well as what the range of wind speed is. Also how many folks you plan to race with. If where you race has good wind, you might consider taking the One Design Rating (105% jib, 108 sqmtr spin)...

Speaking of the bow sprit, mine has had all the clear coat around the tack line block chipped off. I assume it is there for UV protection. Anyone know the best way to repair/re-coat?

Can't say we've done a gybe set yet, but not sure why two knots any worse then one. Roller furling may be boring...but I think the ability to re-deploy the jib/genny in the event of a screw up outweighs the weight savings benefit of not having it. Also is a OD requirement, so why bother with the has...

We use 2 separate lines. We roll the jib/genny, so have had no issue with the spin clew getting hung up. We douse into the foredeck hatch, and then just run the tapes, and set the head, tack and clew over the hatch edge and close the hatch till the next set. If everything works well, we can leave th...

Well, we think we may have the answer finally. After much troubleshooting, talking to reps (Flex-o-Fold, Customer service at J-Boats and TPI), and doing some more troubleshooting, I have come to the conclusion that the issue is not the transmission failing to "go into gear", but rather tha...

Craig, We race PHRF on the Chesapeake. 120 Chute, 155 genny and a PHRF rating of 69. Buying the smaller (108) class chute this year. Based on our racing, I would hazard to guess that a 132 chute would only pay off in very light air. 120 chute works for 5-20kt TWS range, but as wind gets near 20, its...

Dan,
Have had the Yanmar guy down to look at it several times. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen consistently enough for it to have occurred while he is looking at it.
