Re: Keel Mast Step. OSR securing options.

Not enough meat there to drill. Make a right angle stainless L bracket and attach one side to the bolt holding the mast base. Drill and tap the other bracket hole with a slightly larger diameter in the mast the bolt can pass through. Screw in a hex head bolt through the bracket into the hole drilled ...

Re: J109 Airmar DST810 Speedo Calibration

John - that is a noteworthy effort you've done on calibration. The first year I owned Vento Solare I moved the paddlewheel to the centerline as you saw in this old post . Since then I have updated the paddlewheel to use the Gen 2 Airmar analog version that has a larger/flatter paddlewheel that fits ...

Re: Bilge Pump

This is a long winded answer, but similar to what John describes, and as most US based J/109s were shipped:
Rule 1100GPH standard bilge pump Model 27DA (12 Volt)
Aqualarm SS209 Smart Bilge Switch (comes with replacement red warning light panel)

The J/109 included a check valve near the pump ...

Re: Bob Stay Options

Don't do what I did :-)

See this old thread link: https://j109.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=872
I drilled a hole in the bow fore to aft and put a g10 backing plate behind to strengthen. The original concept had a bungee in the anchor locker to pull the bobstay in when the pole retracted. Great concept ...

Re: Deck Tie Down Turnbuckle

Yes - let the mast free stand when you do this. Shrouds, headstay and backstay can be on but loose. Vang should be slack too.

You bought a nice boat owned by a former class officer when it was on Long Island Sound. Glad to see it found a new home.

You should stop by Newport and say hi!

Re: Deck Tie Down Turnbuckle

I'm not sure if there is a torque spec that I've seen for it but what has worked for me is to tighten the turnbuckle until you feel tension, then go another full turn. This should stop the plate with the turning blocks from lifting the deck when the halyards are tensioned.

What hull number and ...

Re: Replacing batteries

Dan,

You can do this with a Group 31 for house and Group 24 for engine start. I recommend using AGMs for both longevity and maintenance free.

Re: Replacing Clear Engine Control Panel

Dan,

I replaced mine by buying a sheet of Lexan, then traced the old one and used a scroll saw to cut it out. Cosmetically if you mask a border along the inside edge you can paint it black (I used a spray can of Krylon). You can then glue a rubber or foam strip to it to seal the inside edge, and ...

Re: Alternator Belt Dust Fix

You can do the tensioning using levers and tension, but it is easier with the belt buddy.

If you have a 3GM as I think you do, this is the standard kit: https://shop.pkys.com/Balmar-48-YSP-3GM-A-Pulley-Kit-for-Yanmar-3GM30_p_4809.html

It all depends on whether you have the stock alternator and ...

Inspection Checklist for 2025 North American Championship

The inspection checklist has been updated for the 2025 North American Championship. The following changes were made from 2024.

1. The list has been reordered to make the process easier, starting topside working from the stern to the bow, then below deck factory installed items, followed by ...

Re: Intermittent water intake

Jerry,

I had a similar problem and found the water source to be where bedding compound had broken down where the stainless pedestal guard was bolted through the pedestal. To find the leak I suggest having a person crawling below while the other sprays a pressure washer to hit all items that ...
