Re: Saildrive Diaphragms Replacement Every 2 Years?

Had a recent scare where the "Water Proof" light came on. That's the warning light for the bladders. Turned out it was just condensation in the bladders and once it was dried out and blown out everything was fine. In the mean time my yard gave me an estimate of $3500 to replace the bladders.

Re: Yanmar 3YM30 Engine & SD20 Saildrive Maintenance Information

Wanted to let everyone know of a recent experience. I started my J 109 about a week ago and the "Water Proof" light came on and stayed on along with the warning buzzer. I figured it was probably the sail drive bladder warning and it was. After the yard did some examining and consultation w...

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

Update on the rudder bearing replacement. I had the rudder bearing replaced in the spring of 2016. The total cost was nearly $4000 and I no longer have any water problems inside the boat. After doing all this and getting the gaiter that wraps around the base of the rudder and the top of the rudder I...

Re: 155 % vs a 145 % Genoa

I had my 145% genoa cut down to a 139.5% genoa. This reduction (below 140%) allowed me to take just a 3 second penalty vs the normal 6 second penalty for anything larger than the class head sail. This sail has turned out to be a massive improvement over both the class head sail and the 155%. I can p...

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

I don't know if my boat ever had the keep sump reinforced however the boat is now 12 years old and there are no cracks in the sump area or on the outside. I think if I was going to have a problem it would have developed by now.

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

Finally got the password thing worked out. In early Sept 2015 we raced in a long 29 mile race and with the original rudder bearing in a 12 year old boat. It was almost all upwind in 14 to 17 knots with 3 foot seas. We were on a port tack for 4 hours. We took on nearly 50 gallons of water. There was ...

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

Update to my earlier posts on the J 109 Rudder bearing issues. In 2014 I had a small leak that was manageable. In 2015 after a hard race over 29 miles my leak became a serious problem taking on gallons of water. I tried the Edison maintenance suggestion of adding Teflon grease to the rudder post. Th...

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

My yard contacted Edison. They have 4 rudder bearings left, and they cost $2,500 each. I'm told Edison did not make the rudder bearings so they bought out what was left and now there are 4. Actually 3, I just bought one as insurance. I don't know what you do after the last 3 are gone but I'm guessin...

Re: Thinking of buying a 109

J 109's have some issues but all boats over time develop issues. I've owned six boats over 30 years and the 109 is hands down the best one of the bunch. It's a very strong, very fast boat with finger tip steering and a just great amount of detail put into the design. I'd say for the money a used 109...

J 109 Toe Rail

There is a toe rail built into the forward part of the deck on the J-109 but nothing after second stantion. I've built some toe rail out of 1 inch by 3/4 inch starboard and attached it to the deck. It bends very nicely and is low enough to sit on it when hiking but high enough to brace the edge of y...

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

Sadly I don't know a lot about this except for the recent quote I received from DMS in Annapolis. Their quote was an astounding $7,100 to replace the rudder bearings in my J 109. This included about $4500 for the bearing, custom made with a brass sleve from the Shuster Corporation and the rest in la...

I don't have any pictures right now but I'll take some early this spring. I might need an email address to send you the pictures. Not sure I can post pictures on the board.

Thanks,
