This is an update by the Technical Committee effective 2 February 2024
Background: The Technical Committee has reviewed a request to permit the use of Lithium Ion batteries for one design racing in lieu of the current requirement of two lead technology batteries with a combined capacity of 150 Amp Hours (Ah). The Technical Committee has determined that use of Ah with lead technology is an accurate reflection of a minimum weight standard to enforce class rules. The introduction of lithium ion batteries has introduced important safety considerations including battery charging, system ground, over-current protection, and thermal runaway protection.
Decision: After careful evaluation the Technical Committee has determined at this time the use of Lithium Ion batteries for one design racing continues to be prohibited. The committee will continue to evaluate this technology over the next year based on testing and industry adoption of safety standards.
