President’s Message September 2020
Hello %firstname% %lastname%,
July and August saw increased racing across the US, but also more postponements and cancellations. So, first the bad news: the new September dates for the East Coast Championship at New York Yacht Club Race Week have frustrated our ability to field the number of boats needed for a class start. As such, there will be no East Coast Championship for 2020. (I am told Leading Edge is more than willing to hold the trophy for another 12 months!)
Next, as you know, we previously cancelled the 2020 East Coast Regatta Series. That turned out to be prescient: American Yacht Club (NY) Fall Series was cancelled and New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta has been unable to garner enough support for a class start.
I, for one, am looking forward to 2021 and resuming our Class events!
Now the good news: J/109 owners have been resilient and determined to enjoy their boats in a safe manner! A few recent highlights:
Racine Yacht Club (WI) The Hook Race. The seven-boat J/109 fleet was won by Courageous, owned by Kris Maybach and Ray Douglas. This year’s race was quite a ride, with multiple boats (including a J/109) losing rigs. A picture of the Courageous crew in action is below:
Chicago Yacht Club (IL) Verve Cup Offshore. Five J/109s raced one-design in an eight-race series. Pete Priede’s Full Tilt took 1st; Robert Evans’ Goat Rodeo was 2nd; and the Smee Again syndicate was 3rd.
Stamford Yacht Club (CT) Vineyard Race. Five J/109s sailed in three different classes. Dan Nash’s Mistal finished 2nd in PHRF Class 11 over several J/120s and other big boats. David Rosow’s Loki took 3rd in the double-handed PHRF Class 7. And Growth Spurt finished 2nd in ORC Class 10.
Ida Lewis Yacht Club (RI) Annual Distance Race. Bill Kneller’s Vento Solare finished 3rd and Bill Sutton’s Leading Edge finished 5th in the competitive 13-boat PHRF class.
I hope everyone enjoys the Fall season, and please be on the lookout for an invite to our annual meeting in October. (And if you have interest in volunteering for the class, please let me know.)

J/109 Custom Boat Website Subscriptions Available
The J/109 Class has arranged with Crew Manager LLC to make custom J/109 boat websites available. Crew Manager provides a boat website with features the Skipper & Crew will use throughout the sailing season. In a nutshell, the team website provides a “Who, What, When, Where and Wear” schedule with automatic reminders. After an event, the Skipper may post results and crew members may submit comments, pictures and stories about the event. Crew Manager works on most any device with a web browser including PC, Mac, iPad, Android tablet, iPhone and Android Phone. The cost for an annual subscription is $90 and includes the website setup. Crew Manager LLC will donate 10% of all 2020 J/109 annual subscription orders to the J/109 Class. The following J/109s have Crew Manager websites.
