Re: Gebo Portlight Replacement Parts

FYI, was able to install a new forward hatch (just the top). I can confirm the forward hatch is "Standard Deckhatch – no Flange (560 × 560mm)"; with cutout size of 500 x 500mm. https://yachtparts.com/product/standard-deckhatch-without-flange-560560mm/ Could not order just the glass/top, ha...

Re: Gebo Portlight Replacement Parts

Curious if anyone has ordered a new forward hatch from Gebo? I emailed them and they sent me a brochure with many different styles (Standard/Flushline, with flange/without). I just want to make sure I get the right style and dimensions before I place my order.

Re: Backstay too long?

Hi, I think this is a fairly common issue. Solution was to shorten the backstay, not the shaft. In my case I had my rigger shorten it by 4 inches, but probably could have done 5 or 6 inches. See this past thread: https://j109.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1020
Congrats on the the new 109!

Mast touch up

Has anyone come across a good touch-up paint that somewhat matches the mast?

Re: propane solenoid failure ?

I have had two issues regarding this on hull 251. The first was the propane tank itself. There was an internal valve that was stuck and needed to be replaced/repaired. Propane shop fixed this. The second, and most recent, sounds very similar to your issue. You may just need a new solenoid, but in my...

Re: Replacement Boom Vang Tang

May want to try Charleston Spar. Check out page 17 of the Charleston Spar J/109 Mast manual (should be in the document section under "info"). Also, as an update to my previous post. The aluminum rivets I originally used became loose. I re-secured with stainless rivets. Much stronger. Rivet...

Bilge pump replacement

Has anyone replaced their electric bilge pump? Or, any recommendations on a replacement. My boat came with a Rule-Mate 1100 GPH, which is not original, does not fit very well, and is malfunctioning.

Re: Replacing Mainsail Halyard Sheave

Never replaced the main sheave but pretty sure the last time I had the mast down for VHF maintenance it can be done through simply and very carefully removing the clevis pin. Mine is a newer mast though, so unsure if there are slight design differences (shouldn't be). There is a handy manual from Ch...

Re: Rudder Leak

Adding a gaiter seems to be a fix for many (including me). There is a discussion about this in a previous post that may be helpful: https://j109.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=999&p=918&hilit=gator#p918 In my situation the old gaiter was torn and water push through, especially in stronger...

Re: Mainsheet cleat support post

Just as an update to this post: I went with Bill's fix for the traveler support rod. Ordered 1/4 - 20 threaded stainless rod from McMaster. I discovered no stripping on the original nuts (Hull 251), but, just to be safe, made the change. Threaded rod threaded nicely through original tube. I added a ...

Re: Painting wheel?

Thanks for the tips. I was going to go Bill's route, but I received a quote from a powder coat company that has done work for me before (on the boom vang). For blasting and coat: about $150. So, I will definitely go this route. Removing old Comfort Grip was a challenge. Had to use a heat gun, severa...

Painting wheel?

Will be adding new leather to the wheel this winter, but noticed some chipping of the paint. Just curious if anyone has repainted their wheel? If so, what paint would you recommend? Or, maybe the best bet is to have it blasted and powder coated?

Re: reparing wood finish

Dan,

Yes, I did build-up with a few coats of the gloss (thinned about 20%). I find the interior Epifanes to be just fine for higher traffic areas. If done right, it sets up quite hard and provides a nice protective finish.
