Re: Replacement Wheel for Helm

The ruling from January 30,2021 is still valid.

Keep in mind the difference in Factory standards between US & French built boats, if in doubt ask the TC, do not pick and choose between the two.

Re: Propeller replacement

Unfortunately that is not a Class Legal replacement. To the best of the TC knowledge two Newport boats replaced props with the composite hub without checking with the TC first. Two class legal props are Flexofold (Racing or Classic) or Gori, all bronze props minimum 16" diameter. Currently I do...

Re: Checklist 2023 NAC

Lithium Ion batteries are not Class Legal and must be removed for Class events. The Technical Committee, with support from J boats, is monitoring the development and as soon as Industry standards are implemented to satisfy all safety concerns we will inform the Class. Keep in mind our J109's are 20+...

Re: Updates to 2004 tuning guide for 2003 hull ?

On Zig Zag, hull #37, the mast butt is all the way forward at 464 mm, rake at 2252 mm(swing arc), J at 4072 mm. This setting works very well with our Quantum sails. TPI the builder of US boats was never known for accuracy, variations of up to plus/minus 0.5" to be expected. Still boats of diffe...

Re: Code Zero Modification for Halyard & Tack Line

This is an unusual request for the Technical Committee to rule on modifications for a sail configuration that is NOT Class Legal. It is the opinion of the TC that the J109 in standard OD configuration has the necessary deck hardware and rigging for the described Code 0 configuration. For option 1, a...

Propeller replacement

See this post with an updated Technical Committee decision effective 2 February 2024 Over the last few years several boats have lost propellers or one of the blades. The Flexofold racing propellers that was standard on most US built boats are no longer in production, the classic blade from Flexofol...

Re: Lithium batteries for J/109 class

Thanks Dan! A very good summary of the issues we face approving Lithum Ion batteries. From a Class rule point of view the perceived weight savings may be the main issue, we do not want to get into an arms race spending three times as much to potentially save 80 - 90 # and on top of that have severe ...

Harken Vang-Master

The TC was asked if the Harken Vang-Master was approved as a replacement. Over the years of production the J 109 was delivered with the Hall Quickvang, Sparcraft, Nautos and unspecified "Rod Kicker". All solid vangs with a maximum power ratio of 12:1. The TC came to the conclusion the Vang...

Re: Mast base location?

On Zig Zag the base is at least 1" thick (hull #37 built by TPI) at factory holes and new holes ~1" forward. I suggest to move the base to get to 460 mm and then drill new holes in the middle of the slots this will give some flexibility to fine tune the location. BTW did you get a longer h...

Re: Replacement Wheel for Helm

All US built boats came standard with a 54" Edson Diamond wheel, no options was available from the factory. This wheel is still readily available, therefore no class legal substitutions are allowed for US built boats. French built boats, as far as we can tell, came with several options from the...

Re: Removing the center table

After a thorough review, the Technical Committee unanimously decided NOT to recommend to the Executive Board a rule change that would add the saloon table as optional equipment (rule 4.3.12). Accordingly, for J/109 Class or Fleet sanctioned events, the saloon table MUST be installed in its original ...
