Re: Headstay length
Thanks Bill. Just wanted to check as the upgrade from the MK III to MK IV Harken Furler is what has confused the issue. The MK III used a stud that is then connected to the fitting while the MK IV uses a different fitting so that you can swap in a new furler without re-swaging the headstay fitting. ...

Headstay length
Can anyone confirm that the headstay length listed in the manuals section of this site is actually the pin to pin length or is it measured differently? Just want to be sure before I place an order. I clipped the chart below from this site.
Thanks, Todd

Re: Wanted: 145% Genoa for PHRF
Thanks Dan, That list format is fantastic. While I'm not familiar with Hathaway as a sailmaker, I will do a little research and get back to you. I am familiar with how quickly the boat can be overpowered with a larger headsail, though it has proven to be a weapon to keep the power on when the wind f...

Wanted: 145% Genoa for PHRF
Just a feeler to see if anyone has a 145% or similar sized #1/genoa that they would be interested in selling. Sail must be in decent shape for local PHRF racing. Would prefer North or Quantum, but am open to other sailmakers.
Thanks, Todd

Re: Cross sheeting the jib
Never thought to ask that here, but I am also genuinely curious if any have come up with a workaround. We have experimented with cross sheeting and the consensus was that it generally slowed our tacks down and put unnecessary strain and chafe by not fairly leading the sheets. Outside of installing a...

Re: Furling block location
Hi Dan, We have had similar problems with our furler as it seems to have taken a beating over the past 20 years, especially each time the rig was taken down. While I am about to replace ours, I did have some success lubricating it with Harken One Drop and that has allowed us to keep it in service. O...

Re: Diesel tank o-ring seal
If it is the large o-ring on the gauge/sender unit, I would check with the manufacturer of that part since they are usually sold together. I can't remember if it has a brand name visible or not, but if it doesn't I would take it off and bring the seal to a NAPA or comparable auto parts store as they...

Re: Harken Winch Drum Resurfacing
That is a good write-up on the differences between two similarly suitable Harken winches. Any regrets or reason to stand strong behind Performa version? If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would still stick with the Performa winches. While they do have a bit more aggressive texture on the...

Re: Harken Winch Drum Resurfacing
We went down this road a couple years back while Harken was still offering that reconditioning service. Even at that point it was a 6 month turnaround, so was not worth it. Also, keep in mind that even if you can get the drum resurfaced, those old winches are no longer supported by Harken, so the ON...

Re: Leak from Chainplate bolts
Hey Bill, With the way the mounting bore appears in this previous thread https://j109.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2152&hilit=chainplate#p2152 I would check with International Marine in Bristol to see what their experience with these has been. https://www.imcne.com/ I'm still curious what the torqu...

Re: Sparcraft mast & boom parts hard to obtain
Sparcraft has atrocious customer service when ordering parts. RigRite is a better option with more in stock parts and quicker shipping. They can also cross reference part #'s from the Sparcraft list of J109 original rig parts on this site. As for the pin, I would just try hitting it with a scotch br...

Re: Spin sheets .....
I agree with Dan that the type of line matters. We chose 8mm "Euro Endura Braid" for our spinnaker sheets. Total length required for the two sheets was 180ft. The J109 owners manual suggests 2x 85ft sheets, but I purchased more in case I messed up the taper or end splice. We actually use t...

Re: Winch Upgrade
Hi Jerry, The cabin top holes are not pre sealed from the factory on our boat #41. Performa winches do have a different hole pattern, which will require over drilling and sealing with epoxy prior to mounting. I replaced my primary winches and the Performa is an excellent upgrade. Sikaflex 291 is my ...

I am aware of two failures. I had my rig inspected in 2017 when it was down and the inspection reveled no changes were required. Re: 20 year Maintenance
While it definitely looks like an upgrade, why are people choosing to retrofit this forestay attachment? Are the older style ones prone to failure? Ours has been in service since 2003 and still appears fine, though the furler itself has taken a beating and may need to be replaced in the coming years...
