Re: Spartite Mast Insert Moving

Thanks- that may be it. When the mast was out in February '22, I took the opportunity to clean and then polish the mast. I bet that reduced the friction. I was out last Wednesday and it moved 2-3 mm again. I'll apply the silicone around it and see if it helps. I did notice when looking up from insid...

Spartite Mast Insert Moving

I was out for Wednesday night racing this week, then we notice the mast moving about 2-3 cm side to side at the deck. After lifting up the boot I noticed that the Spartite Mast Insert/Wedge (see image below) had worked its way up the mast and out of the aluminum mast collar at the deck. I was able t...

Re: Main Halyard Cluch Slipping

Last of my 20-year maintenance/upgrades posts. Getting tired of the main halyard slipping all the time and should have done this years ago.I already upgraded the Spinlock clutch which helps but not 100%. Will be adding the Ronstan Constrictor clutch as a secondary clutch, when I have the headliner o...

Winch Upgrade

Continuing my 20-year maintenance/upgrade. Getting tired of taking the inside headliner off every time to do maintenance on the cabin-top 40.2 Harken winches, plus they are worn. • I assume the Harken Performa 40.2 STP is the approved upgrade. • Am I correct the newer design allows for maintenance w...

Re: Mainsheet Swivel Strengthening Modifications Allowed

I'm continuing this maintenance thread here even though it's in the Class Rules Discussion but can move over to maintenance so others may see it. I continue to have issues with the mainsheet block connection blowing up at the swivel base. This is the 5th time. I know most have been on hard or accide...

Re: 20 year Maintenance

For me this was one of those every 5 every 10 years maintenance as the mast doesn't come done very often (it was my first time). I mainly went with Sparcraft's technical notice and note that older boats have had forestay tang failures. For me no different that the vang bracket and main sheet block. ...

Re: 20 year Maintenance

My boat is almost back in the water. Just waiting for the new rod rigging then re-stepping the mast. As for the forestay tang. I bought it directly from Sparcraft and gave it to our local shipyard. With shipping is was around $192.00.The yard estimated $945 to replace it, but as you know boatyard es...

20 year Maintenance

#44 is close to 20 years old and has always been in Pacific NW saltwater. Time for some overdue maintenance. My boat is currently in the yard for new racing bottom paint and also mast/rod rigging maintenance which will include a furler replacement. 1. To double check for class rules it should be the...

Re: Alternator Belt Dust Fix

Thanks for the quick reply: "Bad batch" may be an issue but it was the official Yanmar belt, don't know if they code for manufacture date like they do on tires, but I will check with Engine Shop. Haven't seen any water, antifreeze or oil, but I will double check I was constantly checking i...

Re: Alternator Belt Dust Fix

Need some help troubleshooting. I bought my J/109 in 2005 and have one of the older ones (#44). It has the older Yanmar 3GM30FC engine, the larger 100 Amp Balmar Alternator as supplied when the boat was first purchased in 2003. I also have 3 105 AH AGM batteries that were upgraded and new about 4 ye...

Standing Rigging Replacement?

Looking for any opinion or if anyone has had experience in replacing the standing rigging? I have one of the older J/109 #44 that is going on 17 years old. I just had the boat in the yard for new bottom paint and inspecting the standing rigging, primarily the turnbuckles. After many years of tuning ...

Re: Mainsheet Swivel Strengthening Modifications Allowed

I just went to upgrade the swivel for the mainsheet. With the older systems I had replaced the connection at least 3 times, and when I took this one apart the U-adapter and the pins were significally distorted, ready to fail again. My question is - how smoothly did the upgrade go for most? I had no ...

Re: Outhaul boom cleat replacement,

Mine wore out as well. Instead of replacing the clam cleat (that slips any way) I used the Ronstan dingy pivoting Lead block w/ small T-cleat (cam-cleat) http://www.apsltd.com/pivoting-lead-block-w-small-t-cleat.html I took the lead guide off the cam cleat then tapped 2 screws about 6-8 inches aft o...

Re: Head Plumbing and Y-valve

I don't know if these will help. Once I got my system back up and running it has been working fine. I did do an upgrade on the schematics and pictures for my boat in case I had to do this again. They are attached below.
