Below is the inspection list the Technical Committee has developed for the 2018 North American Championship. The list is a tool for owners to prepare boats for inspection and at the event check boats for rule compliance. Sails must be registered in advance on the event sail tag registration form. Th...

Re: Main sheet lower block upgrade

Brooke, Thanks for posting this info!
The upgrade is a safety issue and absolutely Class Legal. Other custom solutions for heavy duty versions of this connecting piece are also Class Legal as long as the function of the Block/Swivel assembly is not changed.

Re: Interpretation and Clarification of Rigging & Specification

Based on the comment from Kerry and others it seems some boats have backstays that are too long for the standard J109 size 10 adjuster from Sailtec. In order to fit the overall length and stroke of the adjuster it is legal to shorten the backstay as well as adding toggles if too short. To avoid a si...

Re: Block Island Sails Questions

I agree with the statements made by Bill, perhaps with the following additional comments. If you damage one of the 5 declared sails beyond repair you can ask the Class Measurer for permission to replace it with another registered and approved sail, that sail must then be used for rest of the regatta...

in-hauler ruling on adjustable tracks

I was asked if a track could be mounted on the cabin top for an adjustable in-hauler lead. This is not allowed based on the only allowed additional tracks are unused genoa tracks (4.3.4) After the implementation of in-haulers, 4.3.5 will apply to barber hauling as well as in-hauling using U-bolts or...

Re: Mainsheet cleat support post

The traveller cleat support is a SS tube with 5/16 or M8 threads at both ends. On the way to NA last year the top bolt pulled out by completely stripping the threads and the track started to flex up to an 1". In Newport we tried to fix it but to get to the bottom bolt you have to remove all hea...

Crew available for National at Block

As the Class Measurer I will be at Block to measure boats, unfortunately we have crew conflicts and can not race our own boat.
I will be available to crew the entire regatta, will do anything but foredeck (trust me you do not want me on foredeck!).Will tip the scale at about 210.

Re: 3GM Exhaust Elbow

We had our first 5+ hour delivery over the weekend. The new elbow performs very well. The volume of cooling water is significantly larger, absolutely no black smoke and the engine runs much smoother and revs easier. This is a trip we make several times a year and in the past we have used just over 5...

Re: Clutch replacements

No the primary rope clutches are specified as Spinlock XTS, two doubles on each side. These clutches are still readily available as well as the service kits for them. The hardest or most time consuming issue replacing the cam assemblies is to remove/install the headliners in the head and/or aft cabi...

Interpretation and Clarification of Rigging & Specification

With the average age of the boats in our class now exceeding 10 years the need to replace worn or broken original equipment is increasing. To help owners keep the boats safe and competive and at the same time maintaining strict One Design Specification the Technical Committee with help of J/Boats ha...

3GM Exhaust Elbow

This past season I had two independent Yanmar Mechanics suggesting the Exhaust Elbow should be replaced, stating 12 to 15 years of service is the limit. Our engine was commissioned early 2003 and would fall in that range. Since the engine is running at 3200 rpm without smoke or overheating I elected...
