Re: Jib Inhauler System

Dan, I worked with the sailmaker to get the optimal position for the padeye. I have some recut sails and new sails. Each has the padeye in different locations. I can't give you a conclusive answer on where to mount them, or if crossing the lines will help. My padeye position was based on 2 solid day...

Gebo Portlight Replacement Parts

US built hulls were supplied with Econoline Portlights manufactured by Gebo Marine Glazing in the Netherlands. I was unable to find a US supplier for replacement parts and corresponded with Gebo directly to get replacement rubber seals. They are able to supply parts for the opening portlights. Below...

Re: Jib Inhauler System

Dan, Here is what I see as Pros and cons of the two approaches. Bill's setup pros allows adjustment of both inhaulers from either side has padeye mounted forward to help shape foot and leech more purchase requires less force to adjust Bill's setup cons requires drilling in deck is always there even ...

Re: Bow Pulpit Repair or Replacement?

It was welded on the stern pushpit. If you do the labor to remove and reinstall it, probably more cost effective to have it welded.

Re: Zinc Hungry J109

Dan, You may want to borrow equipment to measure leakage current with a good quality clamp on amp meter. There is a way to measure AC leakage current with an article that explains how on the Fluke website at this link . Additional checks using a Silver/Silver-Chloride reference electrode can be made...

3YM30 Exhaust Elbow

This spring Vento Solare was launched and when the engine was started I had problems getting over 1800 rpm and there was much black smoke with unburned fuel coming out of the exhaust. I had checked the fuel injectors in the fall because I noticed that there was some unburnt fuel in the exhaust, but ...

Limiting Sprit Extension & Measurement Template Check

Bengt Johansson brought one of the bow sprit measurement templates to Rhode Island so we could check some boats locally. I just had my sprit returned after it was sprayed with black Awlgrip and decided to show a method to limit excessive bow sprit extension. This was done at the dock with the bow ac...

Re: Tweaker for Code 0

ps - I've seen other people clip blocks on the welded reinforcements on a stanchion base. I have also seen some of these break the welds so suggest that a padeye be installed rather than using the stanchion base for attachment.

Re: Head Plumbing and Y-valve

Jerry - I have a vented loop on Vento Solare. The hose runs from the head back aft with the loop positioned outboard near the top forward edge of the holding tank, then the return follows the path back. This picture taken when I did the purchase survey is the only photo I have. It is kind of hidden,...

Re: Tweaker for Code 0

I setup a folding padeye in between the "h" formed by the forward gates. A snatch block with cam cleats is attached there and I use Holt Allen #4475 snatch blocks. Yes - you really do need tweakers for tight angles with the code 0.

Re: Head Plumbing and Y-valve

When I rebuilt the Y-Valve I found similar scale buildup as Jerry did. The scale was soft so I scraped using a coat hanger to get as much out as I could. In the future I will use a solvent a couple times per season that contains Phosphoric Acid made for descaling marine heads. You mix up a couple ga...

Keeping Bilge Dry when hauled

I received a good tip from Bengt Johansson who owns J/109 Zig Zag. He keeps his boat at McMichaels in the winter. McMichaels prepares all the boats in the yard for winter storage by drilling a hole into the keel stub at a right angle into the keel sump where the bilge can drain. Bengt forwarded pict...
