Re: Bow Pulpit Repair or Replacement?

I'm a little late checking on post- Did you get it fixed? I had the same thing happen to mine (I think having the bowman sitting on it during pre-starts has something to do with it). The project wasn't that hard. I was able to take it off in less than an hour, then locally we have shop that speciali...

Re: Head Plumbing and Y-valve

Hopefully the final post in the plumbing saga. Just a double check before I re-install new hoses- I reviewed the specs on the J105/J109 plumbing diagram and noticed they have a vented loop between the Y-valve and the overboard discharge. The Raritan PHII Head manual also shows vented loops. When I r...

Re: Head Plumbing and Y-valve

Thanks for advise. They were on solid. In the end I had to cut the hoses, then found out a new problem with all the foul accumulation of salt, calcium deposit that had cut the diameter of the hoses by 50%. Never heard of a "Joker" valve, but that had to be replaced as well- it is appropria...

Head Plumbing and Y-valve

My older J/109 is starting to show her age. Went out for first race and found out the 1) the head won't pump water in, and 2) the Y-valve for tank/overboard is frozen and I broke the handle trying to loosen it. Thought it would be an easy fix, but it isn't- looking for some ideas 1) Does anyone have...

Water under cabin soles

If I do this right this is what you are looking for: The local yard installed it. I still have issues with the lower Edson bearing, but at least it stays dry. I'm afraid to see what's growing inside the gaiter. Jerry S/V Shada J109 #44 This a Jeffa Gaiter Rudder Gaiter http://www.jefa.com/images/sea...

I race against all the others this is why I went with the J109:
1) J-boat reputation
2) The local Fleet for OD
3) The competition in PHRF
4) Sprit boat, no more pole = fewer crew
5) Great performance in all wind conditions

I have hull #44 and have the same problem. The water source is the lower Edson rudder bearing. Too tight and you can't steer, too loose too much water. In addition the Edson bearing gums up and "thumps" when turning. The permanent fix it to upgrade the lower bearing on a haulout, but they ...

I just found the same on my boat. Any idea how the water gets from mast to junction box? I couldn't see any direct route unless the water flows with the wires and cables to the box? If I have a good seal at the mast boot where is the water coming from? Could it just be condensation that gets trapped...

Check for wood decaying mold around the cut edges on all the sole sections, particularly around the mast. The flooring is a "marine grade plywood". My cut edges were not sealed with epoxy and when the mast leaked or water drained through the sections, it soaked into the cut edges and rotte...

An independent question- I just bought the 478 (about two weeks before your notice). I like the unit, but I'm not getting the battery life it states. On the spec it says up to 12-13 hours w/o GXM. I can only get 6-8 max charge. I even had one replaced and same thing. Do they really get over 10 hr of...

Re: Bottom Paint Corrosion

Looks like I get to join this club. Just had the boat hauled for lower rudder bearing work (another story to come later), and saildrive maintenance. Discovered electrolysis on the keel. I had a dehumidifier connect to the boat's AC running in the boat all winter and no problems. My last zinc lasted ...

This may be a little picky, but can we use lighter spool shackles for the halyards? I'm adding 2 halyards (I could have really used an extra one when we lost one the spin halyard in heavy air). Similar type of cordage as the stock halyards that came with the boat, but was thinking of using a spool s...

What is the recommended procedure on maintaining the rig tension when not sailing? Is it ok to leave the rig tight during the off season, or better to loosen it? What about between racing about 2 weeks apart? Mainly- If I had to tighten the rig for heavy air racing, is it ok to leave tight until the...

Good points. That's what I was looking for... a good reason not to. That's one of the reasons why we have the the 200K boat and the others are 100K

Thanks for the tips

I like the turkey baster idea- I'll have to try it. I ended up just buying a different brand of pump with a more solid connection (screw-on rather than a clamp) for the tubing. The Jabsco ones always seemed to develop air leaks at the connection of the tube to the pump. In doing the troubleshooting,...
