How to Set Mast Base Position

I just set the mast base position on Vento Solare and wanted to let people know how to do it. It isn't rocket science and can be done with the rig up. I did this while on the hard, but there is no reason why this can't be done in the water. Tools needed: Phillips Head screwdriver 9/16" wrench H...

Re: Mast base location?

I made a "template" that is nothing but a dowel 460mm long. This allows setting the mast position from the bulkhead just above the trim piece to the forward face of the mast. No need to remove the trim!

Re: Electronics - Best configuration for a new J 109

It has been some time since anyone posted on this topic. My instruments aren't a "new" configuration since many were there when the original owner bought the boat in 2005. I purchased the boat in 2013 and have done some equipment upgrades and lots of system integration as much of the equip...

Re: Mast base location?

I asked Jack Orr, North Sails J/109 Class one design rep about the mast base position. It is definitely supposed to be measured without the trim piece on the bulkhead. He indicated that the old 2004 North Sails setting of 480 mm was updated in the newer tuning guides to 460mm. He said don't worry ab...

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

Frank, Thanks for the update. I located the source of the leak on Vento Solare. It turns out the forward seal on the raw water pump leaked, but only when the engine was running. I located this after I changed the oil this fall. The boat was only in the water for a week after changing the pump, but I...

Re: In Hauler Systems

The inhauler rules change vote passed and became effective 22 October 2015. In response to my question about anchoring the aft block asked of Kerry Klinger, we spoke and he indicated that the aft block is anchored to the cabin top. I have documented the new inhaul setup installed on Vento Solare in ...

Re: Bob Stay Addition

The Bob Stay proposal was discussed at the annual meeting on 22 October and voted down by the Executive Board. The good news is that the Executive Board came up with alternative wording that would permit the use of Bob Stays in local events. I feel that the proposed wording is fair for those who wan...

2016 Schedule for Southern New England

We have an early start on getting the 2016 schedule line up. Brooke Mastrorio (URSA #203)and I have been coordinating calendars to work out the sailing schedule for 2016. Here is a list of area events loaded on a Google Docs spreadsheet you can print. Many of these are listed on the J/109 Class webs...

Re: Mast collar cracking around turning block pins

Carl, You should be able to order it from Waterline / US Watercraft. They are in the old TPI building where the US boats were built.: Waterline Systems 373 Market Street Warren, RI 02885 401-247-3000 Call and ask for Ted Slee or Mike Trindade. When you order, see if you can get the part number so it...

Jib Inhauler System

I have installed a jib inhaul system on Vento Solare similar to those on the J/88 and J/111. The design has been modified to allow both the port and stbd inhaulers to be adjusted simultaneously from either side. When properly setup, the same inhaul amount should be replicated on both the port and st...

Re: Water under cabin soles

I had two sources of water this year. One I found after changing the oil and watching the engine run with the steps removed. The forward seal on the raw water pump was putting seawater in the bilge, only when the pump was running. A new raw water pump fixed this problem. I thought the water in the b...

Projects for Winter 2015-16

Inspired by this old thread about 2014 projects, I've started a new thread for 2015-16. My project list and associated materials list is now stored in a Google Docs spreadsheet at this link.

Re: Rudder bearing replacement

Frank, I noticed salt water accumulating in the bilge after operating in a race about a month ago with big winds and seas. When you checked the rudder bearings, is there any way to verify leakage with the boat at the dock? I have the gator installed around the top and don't see a sign of water there.
