Re: Alternator Belt Dust Fix
An update on the performance after installing the serpentine kit. The engine is noticeably smoother due to less vibration. Apparently the V-belt slipped enough and "chattered" causing the alternator to shake. With the serpentine belt there is absolutely no vibration at any engine rpm and I...

Re: Main Halyard Cluch Slipping
I followed Peter's recommendation and upgraded the cams in the Spinlock clutches. That worked fine until I bought a set of 3Di sails. There is absolutely zero stretch in the sails and the all load was applied at the clutches. It destroyed the cover on my new halyard. Since the class measurer approve...

Alternator Belt Dust Fix
I don't know how many people have issues with the alternator belt generating a bunch of black dust as I have experienced on Vento Solare. After doing some research, I decided to upgrade the V-belt and pulley system to a serpentine belt system. This provides more surface area for the belt and prevent...

Projects for Winter 2016-17
I'm sharing a link to the J/109 Vento Solare winter 2016-17 work list that includes both routine maintenance and one time maintenance I plan on doing when the boat is hauled. There is one tab that lists maintenance scheduled, and another tab that has part numbers with historical information if I nee...

Traveler and Windward Sheeting Cars
The following email was received from Mark Haas who owns Bonfire 4, Hull #220 and is posted for the Class Measurer to review and comment. Question 1: Can you refer me to the Class rules would prohibit the windward sheeting car? Question 2: Does the Class rules allow leeway in adjusting the rigging s...

J-109 Owners, Associates and participants, As a follow up to the 2016 North American Championship Regatta the executive board thought it would make sense to open a forum to discuss how best to utilize category three crew for one-design competition. The NA's saw 5 boats with category 3 sailors placed...

Re: North Sails Tuning Guide
I spoke with Jack Orr who is the North Sails J/109 Class OD rep. Jack confirmed that the North Guide is correct for the base settings. D1 (Lowers) will have lower setting than D2 (Intermediate) at the base settings per this guide.

Re: Rudder bearing replacement
Frank - That is my plan. I spoke to James Doe a Schuster and he provided a temporary solution that had me unclamp the gaiter and peel it inside out. clear silicone caulk was rubbed on the inside of the gaiter, then it was restored over the rudder post and clamped. It significantly reduced the water ...

Re: How to replace the outhaul sheet
Brooke Mastrorio had her rig off URSA last winter and reran the outhaul system because it was twisted in the boom. The rivets were drilled out to take off the boom fitting at the forward end. The J/Boat specs indicate there is 8:1 purchase.

Re: Jib Inhauler System
Another update to the Vento Solare inhaul system. I bought 1-1/4 x 2-1/4 x 24 inch white Delrin stock from McMaster Carr and routed a half circle 1" diameter so it will fit under the handrail. The bar was cut in two to create one for port and starboard. It was cut on a table saw length-wise to ...

Re: Forward junction box .....
I found on Vento Solare that water was running inside the cable from the steaming light. Today I went up the mast and put a bead of silicone caulk where the two wires entered the rubber grommet on the mast. This stopped the water entering the junction box.
