Re: Removing the center table
The Technical Committee was asked to evaluate if the salon table should be listed as optional equipment, rule 4.3.12. Our opinion is that removing the table do not change the performance of the j/109, it is more a perception of convenience/better access or lack of support if removed. Input from owne...

Vang controls
At the annual meeting this came up as a safety related question. The standard vang is a 12:1 system; a 3:1 internal wire or Spectra tackle in series with an external 4:1 block and rope tackle with a cam cleat. Rule 4.3.9 allow this single ended control line to be led back to the cockpit. From a safe...

Re: replacing Mk3 furler with carbo foil
Eliminating the furler is a performance issue and would force all boats to remove it for OD racing, therefore not allowed.

Re: Clutch replacements
I agree with Bill, we have used the Constrictors the last 3 seasons without any problems. We also switched to the ceramic cams in the stock clutches.
As far as class rules, it is no problem to switch to a XTS in series with the factory clutches, but why?

Re: Genoa Track
The Technical Committee is consulting with the experts at J Boats and will come back shortly with a ruling/interpretation of Rule 4.3.4 "installed but unused genoa tracks" as I believe was the original question from Andy to me. To answer the question above using the standard track with the...

Re: Mast base location?
The 460mm is from mast to bulkhead, most boats had to drill new holes for the mast base to get to 460mm. The headstay length of 150mm from base length seem too much, the adjustment of the Harken furler is max 3 inches. Some boats adjust the length of the headstay +/- 0.5 inches depending on wind con...

Re: Dual Genoa Cars Not Allowed
The Technical Committee has discussed the proposal and came to the conclusion that the ruling by a previous TC posted on 5/11/18 still stands. Installing a second car of any kind is prohibited for OD racing, that will be considered an installed spare Jib Car. The increased purchase to 8:1 was approv...

Re: replacing Mk3 furler with carbo foil
The J boat specification is: Harken split-drum Unit 1.0 standard headsail furling system. Over the production run 2001 to 2012 this came as mk3 & mk4, both with the aluminum profile, the carbo option is not Class Legal.

Re: Technical Committee 2020
Just to clarify a difference between The Class Officer page and the above post from Bill. The Technical Committe for 2020 will be: Bengt Johansson, Jonathan Rechtschaffer, Ted Herlihy and Fred Becham. This is one member more than the Class Constitution calls for, but this has wotked very well in the...

Deck/Mooring cleats
Kerry Klingler asked if it is class legal to replace the existing cleats with the "roller cleats" made by Antal. The Technical Committee has determined that it is not class legal to replace the standard horn cleats with any kind of retractable cleats or the roller cleats. It is permitted t...

Re: lifelines
Please check Class rule 4.3.15 and follow link to WS OSR that states 5 mm Spectra is required. I would suggest using 6 mm to give more safety for shafing.

Re: Harken Backstay Adjuster
Dan, I think the best way is to mount the Harken on the SS rod connecting the backstay to the stern (this is a standard part of the backstay assembly and must be used regardless of adjuster installed). At that location it will clear the stern box. Extend the Harken assembly fully and pull the backst...

Re: Jib Car Adjustment Idea
When the Class passed the rule for increasing the jib car adjusters to allow up to 8:1 (rule 4.3.17) we posted the approved J boat layout of the tracks with only one car/track. Installing a second car/track can be considered an installed spare and is not allowed. If owners want to install a second c...
