Re: Batten Length?
Most sail manufacturers have the build data on file. I would contact the sailmaker who may be able to provide the batten using the end keeper in their sail design.

Re: Instrument Cluster
Fix it right. Drill / grind out the loose holes as needed. Thickened epoxy and if a lot was taken out maybe some glass cloth. Gelcoat and redrill the holes.

Re: Check the tabbing on your galley
I got impatient and wanted to finish this job, and decided to use heat lamps so I could apply the gelcoat. The area was cleaned up, light sanded and wiped down with acetone. It was then masked and then a brush used to apply gelcoat. I used the gelcoat with wax additive so it doesn't need any spray l...

Re: Check the tabbing on your galley
Pictures of work in progress. Temperature was 50 degrees today so I took advantage and glassed in new tabbing. There are 2 layers 17oz biaxial fabric that was covered with release cloth. It should kick and be ready to peel the release cloth and light sand tomorrow. I'll wait until temperature is in ...

Re: Updates to 2004 tuning guide for 2003 hull ?
Your mast position and inability to reach the desired end point is a common J/109 condition. See this procedure I posted a few years back in Tipe & Tuning section.
I'm using North Sails and was told it was close enough without redrilling.

Re: Trying to measure mast rake - no black band
If you are looking for the lower measurement band on the mast, the top of the band should be even with the hole in the boom fitting that the mainsail tack is attached.

Check the tabbing on your galley
I found the tabbing between the galley and hull had come delaminated. Today I decided to address the problem. I used a Fein multitool and cut the tabbing flat on both sides, then sanded the surfaces. On another day when it is warmer, I will tab it again with 17oz biaxial cloth and once it kicks will...

Re: Class Rules Interpretation for Handrails and Rope Clutches
Using an inline constrictor clutch is the way to go. Fixed all slippage issues and no wear on the halyards. Class rules require retaining the original Spinlocks but there are now other types of constrictor clutches on the market that were not available when I installed the Ronstan Constrictors (Manu...

Re: Computer Keels and Fairing a Keel
Great project John. Here is a tip to keep the keel better encapsulated so the barrier coat sticks. Once you are down to the stripped lead with the basic shape before using any fairing compound do the following. Have a few stiff long bristle wire brushes handy - these will get destroyed in the proces...

Re: Computer Keels and Fairing a Keel
I used them previously on my J/30. I bought the mylar prints from Compukeel and made my own templates. Unlike the J/109, the J/30 keels got "fatter" as the lead was cast in later boats. I used a power plane to get the shape to meet the templates and faired it. There was a noticeable differ...

Re: Lithium batteries for J/109 class
I will be replacing an AGM Group 31 house battery in the spring. I was looking at the various AGM batteries and noticed the specified performance of the Firefly battery looks very good. See page 4 of the Firefly Oasis MCF-G31 Sec sheet Compare with a typical battery from North Star NSB-AGM31 Unlike ...

Re: Batten getting caught on backstay in light air
See Adrian's suggestion on the softer top batten. I made this change on a main and it significantly improved the issue with the top batten getting caught on the backstay in light air. Your sailmaker could hook you up with an appropriate replacement batten.

Re: Moving speed sensor to centerline
John, What could be done is to build up the inside flat surface once the plywood is cut and tab that to the plywood fore and aft, thus extending the newly formed flat surface as a structural member that reattaches the area cut. Just make sure there are enough threads exposed on the plastic transduce...
