Emergency Rudder?

Does anyone have a good emergency rudder for their boat? We have a future race which requires one, looking for ideas.

Thanks,

Doug Evans in J/109 Time Out did the Newport to Bermuda race last year and had the requirement for emergency steering. Check with him to see what he had. J/109s that do the Mac race also have this requirement.

Mike Keyworth who recently retired from the Brewers Yacht Yards has lots of offshore sailing experience. He published an article in Sailing Scuttlebut a few years back on using a drogue setup for emergency steering.

Here is a good youtube video using a drogue for emergency steering.

Thanks Bill, definitely good techniques to know. The system that the RC requires for this particular race has to be an actual rudder system and we need to demonstrate it works tacking upwind in at least 10 knots of wind. I'll probably end up with something like this but I'm curious to see what others have come up with specifically for a J/109.

Nothing yet, turns out the offshore race we're doing this year doesn't require it but if we do the Pac Cup next year we'll have to come up with something. I'll keep you posted!
