My first time filling propane tank, the filling station cannot get propane to go in the normal nozzle.
Is there a trick? What is that extra large connector on the tank for, does the propane go in there?

Probably a broken stem or seat on the valve. It fills like any other propane tank through the outlet where the regulator attaches.

Does this then require a new tank, or is the valve replaceable?
Is there a good source for tanks already setup to mount in J109's?

Float seems ok, I can here it moving inside at the angle expected moving the tank
As a temporary workaround, I found someone who can fill the tank through the additional connection on the tank

I ran into this two years ago. I believe the tank needs to be filled while on its side like when mounted in the locker.

I had the same problem on my propane tank the one and only time I ever filled it. I don't use it much. The issue is the propane that goes in is a liquid, under pressure. For my tank they had to relieve the air pressure in the tank. When you use propane some of what's left in the tank boils away at normal air pressure becoming a gas in the tank. Between the liquid and the gas the tank is full. They have to bleed the tank in order to fill it.
