Lifeline replacement

Post by Dan Corcoran »

One of my lifeline's lost it's metal end while racing Sunday, from my US built 2007 J/109. The wire slid out from inside it's connector. I feel I should replace all lifelines asap. Crew is asking for synthetic material.

Anyone have advice for doing so? Materials, techniques, what options I have to choose from? What fittings to use with synthetic lines? How long does this take?

Is mobius brummel eye splice a good option for someone who has no experience yet using a fid.

Stick with the stainless. The synthetic lifelines were allowed for offshore use but if it has not been rescinded already it will be due to failures from poor maintenance.

I had synthetic on my j/33, 1/4 inch sampson dyneema. switched back. lots of inspection/maint headache. How frayed is too much ? how confident are you in 25/35 knots ? approximately yearly replacement. no thanks.

The rigger is asking me if the stainless turnbuckles are left handed or right handed. Anyone know?

No telling without looking at them. Which way do you turn them to tighten?
