Loose steering wheel

Post by carlbraden »

Hello fellow J109 owners.

Whilst racing this season in 30+ knots one of my crew fell into the wheel - US build #148 - it is now sloppy with movement.

Has any one had to fix or repair something similar?

Its the standard build Edson build.

Thanks

I posted information about the helm friction lock at this link where there is a diagram of the steering mechanism. The sprocket is held on with 5 bolts must be unbolted to remove the wheel. This will expose a hex nut on the shaft. If that is loose it may be tightened. If the retaining collars that are mounted on the pedestal are loose, you'll need to tighten them. Hopefully the fiberglass didn't crack causing the play, which will require repaired fiberglass to fix.

Should you have a problem, you may contact Edson Marine via email info@edsonintl.com or phone (508) 995-9711. I found them to be very helpful and responsive.

Many thanks Bill - the shaft hex nut sounds like the next to check - appreciate your advice.
