Jib Car Adjustment Idea

Post by j30_rhapsody » Fri May 11, 2018 7:36 am

The following idea was suggested by a Harken representative. Since many boats have now changed the jib car adjustment purchase from 4:1 to 6:1 or 8:1, there is more line in the cockpit. For boats that only sail with the OD jib the line can be limited based on the amount of travel desired. Should a boat use both PHRF sails and class sails, the car must travel a longer distance, thus requiring more line in the cockpit when the car is pulled forward.

Harken suggested that a second car could be put on the jib track behind the existing car with a line connecting the two. The relative position would be set so the cars were at mid range for the desired sails sizes (e.g. OD jib and a PHRF 145% genoa). This would limit the amount or required travel for the jib car so each car would cover the adjustment range for both sails. The result would be less line required for the adjuster.

There is no performance advantage as only the single car for the respective sail would be used (or should be specified as such). Would the Technical Committee please review this idea and post if this would be allowed? For those who race both OD and PHRF it provides an attractive alternative to keep extra line out of the cockpit.

When the Class passed the rule for increasing the jib car adjusters to allow up to 8:1 (rule 4.3.17) we posted the approved J boat layout of the tracks with only one car/track. Installing a second car/track can be considered an installed spare and is not allowed.

If owners want to install a second car for handicap racing, it is their responsibility to remove them for all Class OD events. Word of caution, new CB cars may not work on 2004 or older tracks.

Thanks Bengt.

I will just make up a shorter set of adjuster lines to use with my 6:1 configuration that will be used only for OD racing to keep extra line out of the cockpit.
