Clear Engine Ignition Cover Replacement / Repair

Post by Dan Corcoran »

The swinging cover over the ignition key broke at the little nub the screw goes into.

Anyone have any luck repairing (5200?) or replacing it?

The company that supplied those covers is out of business last I heard. Might be able to find some type of plastic fabricator locally to make a new one or just go to Home Depot and pick up a piece of plexiglass and make a new one. Alternatively you could you grind off the nub and maybe put a hinge on the top? I've thought about doing that to mine thinking it may work better.

I purchase some clear Lexan at Home Depot and traced the old one using a scroll saw, then carefully drilled the holes. I masked the edge on the backside and painted the outer edge black, then put on foam with adhesive along the edge. It works great.

I finally pulled the trigger on this replacement. The Plastic Factory in Bridgeport, CT made it. I chose the tint. Very reasonably priced and great customer service. https://www.theplasticfactoryct.co

Bill's recommendation on painting the outside edge (1/2 inch all around) was great. Much better result than the black vinyl tape used by the factory.

John,

Do they have the dimensions to produce this for a "standard" order, or was it a one time custom build?

It was a one-off using my old one as a template. I am happy to give the old one back to them as the mold if this is something we think is worth doing.
