Photos of my inhauler setup.
The shock cord ends have gotten a bit ragged after a few years, but the cord doesn't last more than 3-4 years in the sun anyway. Next replacement cycle I will tie them with perfection loop or overhand loop knots (theoretically better than a bowline in shock cord) and ...

Re: Advice on pole and rigging for jib and/or asym spin
I have an adjustable whisker pole setup using a Forespar LC10-18UTR, initially for a 2012 Quantum #2 that wasn't cut for inhauling. Switching to a North 2021 #2 (higher wind version) cut for inhauling, the clew is, paradoxically, somewhat lower when set out on the whisker pole. So, the ring on the ...

Re: Looking for inhauler set ups
Hi Dbrousseau,
Worse comes to worse, come and look at Lindo in Sausalito. I've had an inhauler, initially rigged by Easom, for about 5 years now, but I've changed it around some since I last took comprehensive legible photos of the setup. I have the high-wind #2 jib from North. It's not cut to ...

Re: Any recommendations for cord, and overall design?
Hi Dan,
I've had 10mm Marlow D2 Classic spinnaker sheets for 5 years and they've worn well. Hardly any cover fraying. The classic neutral color sometimes looks a little dirty, and certainly doesn't have that grand-prix coloring. D2 race might look a little more modern. I didn't go higher tech as I ...

Re: Ring dings
I looked today: I have the shock cord attached to the rod 32" above the deck, with an 18" length of cord between the rod and the ring.
Note that I have a North "high wind" #1 jib, whereas a lot of east coast boats have the lower wind version. The higher range #1 doesn't lend itself to as ...

Re: Moving speed sensor to centerline
Bill,
Thanks for all the detail and especially for digging up the photos!
Its great news that over all these years, you haven't seen stress or flex issues in just cutting the plywood rib.
FWIW: I think on my hull, the plywood rib is glassed into the under-berth bulkhead where you have the door ...

Moving speed sensor to centerline
Hi,
I'm trying to race to polars, and I've reached the tack-to-tack and other limitations of my existing circa 2015 Triton B&G system. My electronics guy is recommending that I move the Airmar DST800 paddlewheel speed sensor to the centerline. (And also upgrade to some Zeus components, the ...

Re: Ring dings
Hi Dan,
I've held my inhauler rings up with some thin shock cord tied around the outer-part of the ring with 3mm dyneema whipping, and then up to the innermost shroud just above a few wraps of riggers tape around the rod. Occasionally the ring gets pulled into the stainless handrail, but never hits ...

Re: J/109 top ten for singlehanded?
I haven't tried to singlehand any other ~35ft boats, but I've taken Lindo (#195) out on San Francisco Bay (and near-offshore in calmer days) singlehanded well over a hundred (150?) times over the last ten years. It's very doable, but a workout our usual summer breeze. You are almost always dumping ...

Re: PHRF Almost Distance Racing
FWIW: I haven't seen anything in the SFYRA rating committee meeting minutes for the J/109. The main choice here seems to be genoa PRHR 69 vs jib-only PHRF 72.

Re: Jib & Main Tips and Tricks w/OD sails
Hi Dan,
BLUR posted a short-handed jib-and-main target speed chart here: https://www.blur.se/2016/12/24/shorthanded-going-j105-j109/
I've been working to a different chart this summer on SF Bay and just re-discovered this chart a few weeks ago. Hoping to give it a serious on-the-water trial before ...

Re: Winch Handle Holder Alternative
I also went with the Blue Performance 608898-BP435. I sewed a short piece of webbing on the bottom and puckered the top slightly and was able to reuse the existing holes and screws. No usage problems with this setup after a year of use. Can't see the webbing either.

Re: Outhaul boom cleat replacement
Interesting. I initially assumed that something like this would be possible. But then, looking at various catalogs, I didn't see an obvious solution for mounting a relatively wide cam cleat into the very narrow channel under the boom.
A photo of how you mounted the cam cleat to the underside of the ...

Outhaul boom cleat replacement
My under-boom aluminum outhaul clam cleat, probably original, has been slipping for a while now. Any advice from someone who has successfully upgraded to a solution with a little more positive control? Perhaps a small cam cleat with a fairlead to keep the line captive? Or is it best to stick with ...

Source for original winch handle pockets
The original winch handle pockets on our 2005 US made 109 are somewhat taller (12.25") than the standard Lewmar (9.8") and other generally available pockets. The original plastic has started to deteriorate and become sticky. I'm (naively) hoping to just re-use the existing screw holes and not get ...
