Keel Upgrade/Problems
Moderator: forumadmin
Most of you have probably received notice from Pearson Composites about the upgrade kit for the 109's keel. I believe a few boats experienced some cracking along the keel/hull juncture area. Would any of the owners who have seen this on the boat care to share their experience?

I had Ed Bahen from St. Pete fly up and do the work. TPI covered it under warranty, he had it done in a week, the boat was returned cleaner than when I found it. The next regatta we entered we won the North American Championships.
I suggest getting it done as soon as possible. The longer you wait the more more the keel could be stressed.

Had the work done recently. Still waiting for Pearson Composites to re-imburse but I believe it's not an issue.
Unfortunately the boat ran aground on delivery from Hong Kong to Manila just a week later. Upgrade seems to work though as no crazing or stress marks in the area where reinforcement went in. Cracked trailing edge though.

At least 130 boats have received upgrade kits to strengthen the keel attachment. The upgrade should prevent keel flexing which was an issue for several J/109s. The upgrade is a warranty item and will be coordinated by Pearson Composites.
Owners who have not arranged for the upgrade should contact their JBoats dealers or Pearson Composites immediately for assistance. You should complete this upgrade before you launch this spring.

J-Boats is guilty by association only. The builder, Pearson Composites, is the responsible party. They admit it, and make claim to taking care of the charges, yet have been slow to pay on many of the jobs. Although this is not a guaranty of payment you should at least make certain that your dealer is aware of the status of your service bill. They need to know if the docket remains open on the job, and who the service provider was that is owed the $.

I had my keel upgrade done on my J-109 in Jan 09. I have submitted a paid invoice to Pearson Composites early in Feb and have not received the $2,500 that I paid. I am hoping for the best, but I am not encouraged by what I am hearing. Mark at PC said he had approved my reimbursement and sent it on to accounting. Yea right. J-Boats has removed all their production from PC for what reason(s) I don't know. I certainly feel J-Boats should stand by their products and should be helping along with the J Boat Dealers involved. I think the economy is a problem too, and would not be surprised to hear PC is in bankruptcy proceedings.

Is there a list of all of the J-109 that have had the repairs completed and the cost of those repairs?
One of the issues with Pearson Composites is what is the cost and slow payment of those repairs. Not all boat yards have the same costs fo operations nor do they do the same quality of work. They all do quality work some measure it differently.

I have hull #32, I have not yet been reimbursed by Pearson Composites, or J/boats for the work they okayed in February 09. When I called for instruction on how to proceed with the warranty repair, Mark should have indicated at that time they were no longer reimbursing for the repairs.
All of the unpaid owners should file a small claims action naming your J/dealers, J/Boats, your salesmen and Pearson Composites as parties to the law suite.
Is there a way to get a list of the unreimbursed warranty claims? Please feel free to contact me Chris Mewes jezebelsailing@roadrunner.com

I am considering purchasing a 2005 or 2006 J 109. I am told by the broker that both boats have had the Keel Sump reinforcement work done. Question - did the sump reinforcement resolve the flexing issue? Have any Keel sump cracking or other related problems come to light after the reinforcement campaign?
Thanks
Dave
