We went to Home Depot and picked up a delta faucet and replaced the whole thing. Fit right in the hole in the countertop and connected to the water lines no problem. I replaced mine last year, not very hard but does take quite a while and is a bit tedious. If you wet the leather it should be easier to stretch over the wheel. I figured that out a little too late, would have probably been much easier had I known that.

We had the same problem recently on Junkyard Dog. There seems to be a threaded insert in each end of the SS tube that failed on our boat. One issue I ran into was the friction rings would get caught on the eye splices for the jib sheets. Easy fix, just used a stainless steel ring instead. If you have eye splices on your jib sheets check to make sure the friction ring is big enough.

Not sure I can offer any brilliant solutions you haven't already thought of but just in case, have you checked your galvanic isolator to make sure it's working? We had to replace ours because the original had a fault in it. Not sure if this helps but the manual for the original isolator can be found ...

Nothing yet, turns out the offshore race we're doing this year doesn't require it but if we do the Pac Cup next year we'll have to come up with something. I'll keep you posted!
